AEP Communities Dominate 2017 Top Micropolitans List

Site Selection Magazine has released its 2017 list of top micropolitan communities in the United States and once again Findlay, Ohio is ranked number one for the third year in a row—and has made the list an astounding 11 times in the past 17 years.

But Findlay isn’t the only micropolitan to make the list from Ohio. The Buckeye state had 17 communities on the list, including 12 in the AEP service territory:

  • Ashland
  • Cambridge
  • Chillicothe
  • Defiance
  • Findlay
  • Fremont
  • Marion
  • New Philadelphia-Dover
  • Portsmouth
  • Tiffin
  • Wapakoneta
  • Wooster

Combined, these micropolitans landed 81 new or expansion projects in 2016, an accomplishment for which each community should be extremely proud. According to the Site Selection article, “In 2016, the efforts and rewards of Ohio micropolitans were not just impressive, they outpaced the rest of the nation by a strikingly wide margin.”

Outside of Ohio, six other micropolitans from our service territory also made the 2017 rankings:

  • Angola, Indiana
  • Plymouth, Indiana
  • Natchez, Louisiana
  • Natchitoches, Louisiana
  • Danville, Virginia
  • Martinsville, Virginia

Each of these communities is a great place to do business. It’s clear that many companies are continuing to reap the benefits of doing business in these smaller economies, which do not carry the same economic weight as larger cities do, but are still productive population centers, according to Site Selection.

But do you know the number one factor cited by Site Selection that is crucial to the success of a micropolitan economy? It is an active, well-financed, professionally operated economic development organization. We could not agree more and are so grateful to be working with so many great communities and EDOs across the United States.
