In May, AEP published our 2017 Corporate Accountability Report, an integrated report on our stewardship as a public company and community partner. This year’s report reflects AEP’s ongoing transition to becoming the energy company of the future and more than a decade-long commitment to transparency and engagement.

Nick Akins, AEP chairman, president and chief executive officer introduces the report by saying “We have a vision for American Electric Power to deliver an energy future built on diverse energy resources and an interactive power grid that is more reliable and secure. We are transforming our business to create sustainable economic, social and environmental value for all of our stakeholders. We believe the power to shape the future is in all our hands and by working together we have the ability to turn this vision into reality.”

2016 achievements included:

  • AEP achieved a 44 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions since 2000; we project that to increase to a 56 percent reduction in 2017;
  • We updated our company brand to reflect our clean energy transition and commitment to customers and communities;
  • We began serving customers in Indiana and Michigan from our first AEP-owned universal-scale solar project;
  • We partnered with the City of Columbus, Ohio, and others and were chosen over more than 70 other cities to win the federal Smart City Challenge, which seeks to accelerate the transition to an electrified, low-emissions transportation system;
  • We energized our first BOLD transmission line, developed by our own engineers, reducing tower heights, increasing line capacity and using existing rights-of-way;
  • Joined Paradigm for Parity ® to achieve gender parity in all leadership levels by 2030;
  • Established a new Strategy for Sustainable Development and began the work of setting new sustainability goals; and,
  • Donated $20.9 million in Corporate and AEP Foundation grants to support 1,800 community organizations.

In addition to AEP investors, this report can be used by our customers, prospects and community partners to understand our performance, initiatives and strategy for the future. These are exciting times for us at AEP, I invite you to review the report and provide your feedback.
